Spinal or dorsal part of the deltoid muscle
Innervation
- Axillary nerve (C5–C6)
Origin
- Anterior part: lateral third of clavicle
- Lateral part: acromion
- Posterior part: lateral third of the spine of the scapula
Insertion
- Deltoid tuberosity
Function
- Powerful abductor of the humerus
- Anterior fibers: flexion and internal rotation of the humerus
- Posterior fibers: extension and external rotation of the humerus

- Spine of the scapula
- Deltoid tuberosity
Precautions
- Shoulder joint
- Radial nerve
- Axillary nerve
Technique
- Patient seated
- Pincer grip
- Usually with a 0.3mm x 5cm needle
